Managing notifications
Stash sends notifications to keep you on top of inventory without you having to check constantly. The most common ones: low stock alerts, critical stock warnings, and out-of-stock notifications. This article covers what they are and how to manage them.
The three notification types
Low stock
Fires when an item drops to or below its low-stock threshold for the first time. Example: you set the threshold to 5 kg, and the item just hit 4.5 kg.
Critical stock
Fires when an item drops to or below the smaller of: half its threshold or 2 units. So if your threshold is 10, critical fires at 5. If your threshold is 3, critical fires at 2.
This is the "you really need to act now" alert.
Out of stock
Fires when an item hits 0. The most urgent alert.
Where notifications appear
Bell icon in the top-right of the app — click to see the list
Email sent to all Admins (Members can opt in)
Real-time UI updates — the dashboard and item lists reflect the new state instantly
Where the thresholds come from
Each inventory item has its own low-stock threshold. Set or change it on the item's detail page. See Setting low stock thresholds and reorder quantity.
Items without a threshold set don't fire notifications — they're invisible to the alerting system. Set thresholds on your top items first.
Customizing notifications
Currently:
You can't turn off the notification types — they always fire when conditions are met
You can mark all as read from the bell icon dropdown
You can silence email notifications in your profile settings (in-app bell still works)
Per-item or per-shop notification preferences are on the roadmap.
Why am I getting too many notifications?
The most common cause: thresholds set too high. If you set every item's threshold at 50% of typical stock, every busy day will trigger half your inventory's alerts.
Better practice: set thresholds at the level where you'd genuinely want to reorder, not at "comfortably stocked." For most fast-moving items in a café, that's about 3–5 days of consumption. Use the Order Planner as your proactive view and let notifications catch the surprises.
Why am I not getting notifications?
Check:
The item has a threshold set (Settings → item detail page)
